Te Tiriti o Waitangi
The Treaty of Waitangi
As the home of the Tainui Waka and with connections to Te Tiriti o Waitangi through our tūpuna Te Matanga, Te Waraki and Haupōkia, the annual Kāwhia Kai Festival provides an opportunity to recognise that affiliation for the Iwi of Kāwhia. Kāwhia Moana, is an appropriate place to celebrate the event of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It has been noted on the map of ‘Locations of Treaty Signings’ and Kāwhia has been mentioned on many occasions.
